Redling Fine Art is pleased to present two concurrent projects by New York based artist Brian O’Connell.   The Concrete Boat Project will begin on March 26th and last 9 days, during which time O’Connell will take up residence on a Malibu beach and build a 13 foot ferocement boat . The project will culminate in a boat launch in Marina Del Rey.   At the gallery we will present Structural, Uncontrolled Hollywood, Political, Auteur, Cosmic,Happy, Sad, and Ordinary, in which a 16mm projector is exhibited as an art object rather that a instrument for viewing.  The projection wall will be painted to compensate for the difference between the ambient light and the illumination of the projector.

Both projects invoke technologies and cultural practices of the recent past that have reemerged in recent years within specifically artistic contexts. The first project uses cooperative production and alternative material practices of 1960’s and 70’s countercultural movements as the source for the building of an absurdist sounding but fully functional concrete boat made out of beach sand which is at the same time a large scale sculptural form.  The second reduces the use of 16mm projection within the gallery space to it’s most extreme by removing both the film and negating the effect of the projection as much as possible; calling into question the status of both projector and projection as apparatus, sculptural object, and installation.

Brian O’Connll has exhibited throughout the United States and Europe including solo shows at Adamski in Aachen and Berlin, Germany and Laure Genillard in London, England.
